How Amazon TV production sets are using fewer fossil fuels

Following Amazon’s investment in Moxion Power, clean energy batteries are taking the place of diesel generators. Amazon is replacing diesel fuel generators on its TV production sets with cleaner energy options from climate tech firm Moxion Power. Amazon is one of the pioneer entertainment businesses in Hollywood to employ Moxion Power batteries to power the production, instead of the higher-polluting, noisier generators normally that are common in the industry.

This is another milestone in Amazon’s pledge to create operational improvements in decarbonizing its company and become carbon-neutral. Amazon made a previous investment in Moxion Power’s technology via the company’s $2 billion capital fund which makes investments in green tech firms to enable Amazon to reduce its carbon impact. On different Amazon film and television sets, these batteries are powering cameras, camps, makeup trailers, and other equipment.

No emissions

Amazon hopes to deploy Moxion Power batteries on more studio sets in the United States next year. According to the Sustainable Production Alliance, the fuel needed to run generators and transport accounts for over half of the carbon emissions from the average film. Moxion Power’s batteries create no emissions or pollution, are used indoors, and work nearly silently. They do not require any energy-consuming warming or cooling intervals and they are easy to operate because of the reductions in diesel fuel costs.

Aside from movie production sets, these batteries may supply the energy demands of building sites, charge EVs, and provide electricity to disaster-affected regions. Customers, Hollywood talent, and production teams value Moxion Power’s batteries because they enable Amazon to offer entertainment with fewer emissions. Amazon sets powered by batteries emit less pollution and make less noise, demonstrating to other players in the business that modest adjustments, like changing generators for cleaner energy batteries, may have an instant and large environmental impact.

Net-zero carbon

Amazon’s collaboration with new climate technology startups such as Moxion Power is a great and essential step toward decarbonizing its operations. Amazon’s Climate Fund has made an investment in about 20 startups, as part of Amazon’s larger Climate Pledge pledge to achieve zero carbon throughout the company. There does not exist a more powerful voice on the planet than Hollywood, therefore Amazon Studios’ commitment to such technology shows that entertainment players are prepared and ready to make the shift to greener energy.

The batteries are efficiently powering Amazon’s productions at a lower cost, while also enabling the business to meet its larger climate objectives. Amazon hopes this commitment drives other players in the entertainment sector to think about integrating with new climate tech. In a bid to meet its objective to become net-zero carbon, Amazon has to seek other long-term methods to operate all aspects of the company, including the entertainment side.
