Amazon Echo Dot 5 review

Modest steps, not massive ones, are how Amazon likes to advance its Echo smart speakers, sometimes but small steps are all that’s needed. Although the additional motion sensors allow you to engage with the device with a tap, the 5th Echo Dot doesn’t sound all that different from the previous model. Although it is a competent smart speaker, the Echo Dot Plus Clock costs extra and adds a Led indicator that may show helpful information in addition to all of the other functions of the normal Echo Dot. The Device With Clocks is our Editors’ Pick for compact smart speakers as a result of this.

Very similar sphere

The physical appearance of the 5th Echo Dot and the fourth-generation models are virtually identical. It is a 3.9 by 3.5 inch (HD) sphere that comes in white or light blue. The sphere is divided in half diagonally, the front and forward half being encased in matte plastic, as well as the bottom and rear half being covered in grille cloth. All along the top of the spherical, four rubber buttons—action, mic mute, volume up and down—protrude from the cloth. From around the flat base is a light ring that illuminates blue whenever you engage with Alexa and concentrates into a bright spot to show the location from which it picked up the spoken command.

The inbuilt speaker driver has been slightly improved by Amazon. With a 1.73-inch driver as opposed to the 1.6-inch engine of the 4th Echo Dot, it is somewhat bigger. The newest speaker weighs 10.7 ounces, which is an ounce and a half lighter while having a bigger membrane. This speaker is intended to be stationary and is not intended to be portable, therefore the weight decrease is not particularly noticeable in normal use.

The Echo Dot’s new motion sensors enable interactions with the speaker other than voice commands and the handful of keypads on top. Now you may use a light touch on the speaker’s top to pause or resume music, halt phone calls, stop ring alarms, or snooze alarms. The Echo Dot may now function as just a node of your Eero networks if you use one thanks to Amazon’s addition of support for Eero mesh networks.

The node offers Eero Wi-Fi coverage for more than 1,000 square feet and speeds of up to 100 Mbps for ten devices at once. The Echo Dot can also connect to the Amazon Sidewalk sharing network and has Bt and dual-band of around 802.11ac Wi-Fi capabilities. Sadly, Amazon removed a crucial component from the earlier Amazon Echo: a 3.5mm connection. As a result, a bigger speaker cannot be used with the new Echo Dot.

The Influence of Alexa

The Echo Dot was created to leverage Amazon’s Alexa speech assistant as an Echo speaker. Now that Alexa is almost eight years old—almost a tween!—Amazon has continuously deployed improvements to its companion to increase its capability. It is a potent voice assistant that enables you to find out sports results, weather forecasts, and other important information, set timers, and alarms, look up and listen to music and audiobooks, manage smart home devices, and make voice calls.

Alexa can browse audiobooks on Audible and tracks on Amazon Music to find amusement. It can also use such services to play music, podcasts, and radio stations, including Amp, Itunes, Apple Podcasts, Spotify,  Tidal, and TuneIn. You can use Alexa to operate the Amazon Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube, or Fire TV if you connect your Echo Dot to one of those devices. You can use Alexa to operate Amazon’s Fire Stick, Kindle Cube, or Smart TVs if you connect your Echo Dot to one of those devices.

One of the most popular voice assistants for managing smart home appliances is Alexa. Thousands of products, including video motion sensors, security cameras, intelligent lamps, smart lights, smart appliances, and smart thermostats, are supported by all of the main consumer home automation firms. You may program routines to operate several devices in response to one voice command or at specific times of the day.

Alexa may create “Hunches,” in which it assesses the status of your smart home’s gadgets based on your previous behavior and reminds you to take action, such as locking the doors or turning the lights off when you leave the house. Voice calls are supported by Alexa via a number of providers. By connecting your AT&T or Verizon phone account, you may make regular calls to any number in the US, Canada, Mexico, or the UK and receive calls as well. Drop-In allows you to communicate with your Amazon acquaintances through their Alexa devices and connects you to other Amazon users.

Through the Echo Dot, Alexa allows Skype calls as well. The majority of these functions are akin to those offered by Google Assistant and its Nest brand of smart home appliances. It is entirely up to you whether you decide to live in a Google or an Amazon household. In the past, Google Assistant has performed better at naturally occurring voice recognition, although Alexa has greater third-party skill support. However, they are roughly comparable when it comes to fundamental features.
