WhatsApp working on macOS/iPadOS crossover app using Project Catalyst

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new macOS and iPadOS app that uses Project Catalyst.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on new software using Apple’s Apple’s Catalyst project, which allows developers to create one piece of software for iOS and have it ported to iPadOS and macOS with just a few clicks.

It’s the latest company to transition to Project Catalyst and a sign that soon, for the very first time, we could see WhatsApp come to the iPad.

The report said: “How does the macOS app look? Exactly like the iPad app we spotted some time ago. They have the same interface, but WhatsApp for macOS Catalyst will have some UI improvements: they are needed to use the app correctly on a desktop interface.”

There’s no clear indication of if or when the new app will launch, but the fact Mark Zuckerberg hinted that an iPad app was coming suggests that we’ll see it sooner rather than later, perhaps even before Christmas.

Speaking earlier in the year, Zuckerberg said: “Yup. It’s been a big technical challenge to get all your messages and content to sync properly across devices even when your phone battery dies, but we’ve solved this and we’re looking forward to getting it out soon!”

WhatsApp recently rolled out multi-device compatibility for the first time, allowing consumers to permanently log in on devices such as MacBooks and iMacs and access the same WhatsApp features they’re used to.
