Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, may invest part of his immense resources in Nuevo León, as the entrepreneur is apparently evaluating a town in the Monterrey metropolitan region as the location for a new electric vehicle facility.
The Tesla and SpaceX founder visited the northern border state where he met with Governor Samuel Garcia and other state leaders, as well as US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar. Musk is thought to be eyeing Santa Catarina as the location for an EV facility, probably to be managed by Tesla.
Tesla executives followed the 51-year-old South African native to his meeting with authorities from Nuevo León. Santa Catarina, located just west of Monterrey, is a seven-hour trip from Austin, Texas, where Tesla is based.
The EV manufacturer’s Mexican suppliers already have their own special lane at a Mexico-US border crossing, owing to a contract negotiated between the firm and the Garcia-led state government.
Confidentiality Agreement
The governor and his social media influencer wife Mariana Rodrguez uploaded many screenshots of media reports about the meeting to their Instagram accounts, claiming a confidentiality agreement they agreed to with Musk.
One of Garcia’s posts was overlaid with an emoji of two hands clenched together, implying that Garcia is hoping for Musk to invest in the state. Musk was drawn to Nuevo León by the state’s business-friendly atmosphere, according to the social media-savvy governor.
Garcia is upbeat about the future of his state, emphasizing that it is a job creation powerhouse and a magnet for international investment. One of the other officials that met with Musk in Monterrey, State Economy Minister Iván Rivas, stated that authorities are assessing what they can do with Musk.
He emphasized that suppliers to Tesla and other EV manufacturers have already established themselves in Nuevo León, an industrial region and one of Mexico’s economic engines. Rivas told reporters at the Agiliza Nuevo León event that any investment from the world’s richest person would be beneficial, but that they can’t really talk about the matter since they have a confidentiality agreement.
Tesla Expansion
Musk has stated that Mexico and Canada were being evaluated as potential locations for a Tesla manufacturing factory. According to Elon Musk, Tesla is looking at sites in the United States for a new factory, but they are also exploring certain site alternatives in North America more generally, including Canada and Mexico.
Tesla has manufacturing operations across the world that produce electric automobiles, batteries, automobile components, industrial machinery and tools, solar panels, and chargers. Tesla has seven plants throughout the world as of 2022. The Fremont Factory is the company’s initial production location.
Thanks to a relationship with Panasonic, they create lithium-ion batteries at the first Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada. Giga New York manufactures solar panels rather than electric automobiles.
The fourth, and first plant Tesla established outside of the United States, is the Giga Shanghai. Since 2019, this factory in China has started producing electric vehicles. The remaining two gigafactories, Giga Texas and Giga Berlin began manufacturing electric vehicles in 2022.
