Second season of Slow Horses is teased in the final episode of season one

A second season of Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses has been teased in the first-season finale, which was released on Friday.

The six-part espionage drama is based on Mick Herron’s novel of the same name. It stars Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas, and benefits from the writing talents of Morwenna Banks, William James Smith, Jonny Stockwood and Mark Denton. The director of the series is James Hawes.

Apple has described the “quick-witted” drama as following “a dysfunctional team of MI5 agents – and their obnoxious boss, the notorious Jackson Lamb – as they navigate the espionage world’s smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces.”

While Apple hasn’t yet given any details of when the second season might be released, the end of the last episode of the first season does at least give fans a ‘sneak peek’ of what they can expect.

The teaser seems to indicate that the new season will be based on Herron’s 2013 novel and the second in the series, Dead Lions. There are currently seven novels in Herron’s series, which is also often referred to as the “Slough House books” or the “Jackson Lamb series”; an eighth is set to be published in May 2022.

The logline for the Dead Lions novel states: “As the agents dig into their fallen comrade’s circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient secrets that seems to lead back to a man called Alexander Popov, and a decades-old conspiracy with a brand-new target: London’s newest, tallest skyscraper…”

It also looks like the show will gain several new cast members, Variety having reported that Peaky Blinders star Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Kadiff Kirwan from This is Going to Hurt will join for the second season.

Although it has not yet been announced which parts Edwards and Kirwan will play, keen readers of the book series will know that in Dead Lions, two new characters join the team at Slough House: Shirley Dander and Marcus Longridge.

The first season of Slow Horses can be streamed on Apple TV+, with six episodes available to binge. Users can purchase subscriptions directly from Apple TV+ or as part of the Apple One bundle.
