Today, Nothing unveiled its second-generation wireless earbuds, the Nothing Ear (2), which boast many features similar to Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 but at a more affordable price point. We’ve conducted a hands-on review of the Ear (2) earbuds to determine if they present a viable alternative to the AirPods Pro 2 for cost-conscious consumers.
The Ear (2) earbuds succeed the Nothing Ear (1) and maintain the same overall form factor. Nothing’s products are distinctive due to their transparent design, showcasing some of the internal components for a unique and eye-catching appearance. The stem features a clear body, while additional components are housed in a white plastic top fitted with a silicone tip for a comfortable in-ear fit. The Nothing Ear (2) is nearly as comfortable as the AirPods Pro 2, even during extended periods of use.
Like the AirPods Pro 2, the Ear (2) earbuds are equipped with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Nothing promotes features such as personalization, which tailors ANC to a user’s ear shape, but the ANC on the Ear (2) is roughly on par with that of the AirPods Pro 2. The earbuds offer a transparency mode designed to adjust noise reduction based on the environment in real-time, similar to Apple’s Adaptive Transparency. However, no one seems to replicate Apple’s Transparency quite as effectively, and the Ear (2)’s transparency options fall short.
In terms of sound quality, Nothing has incorporated Hi-Res Audio certification and LHDC 5.0, a low-latency audio codec aimed at delivering superior sound. The earbuds also feature an 11.6mm driver and a “dual-chamber” design for enhanced sound quality and “smoother airflow.” Although the sound is impressive, it doesn’t quite match the AirPods Pro 2 standard.
The Ear (2) earbuds lack several features available when using AirPods Pro 2 with Apple devices, including instant pairing, automatic device switching, and Spatial Audio, which potential buyers should consider.
Nothing emphasizes features such as Dual Connection for simultaneous connection to two devices, a personal sound profile for customization, and clear voice technology for improved call quality. The customization aspect is something unavailable with AirPods, which may appeal to those seeking greater control over their listening experience.
The Nothing Ear (2) earbuds offer 36 hours of total playback time with the charging case battery life included and ANC turned off, as well as IP54 water resistance, making them sweat-resistant. The earbuds have on-device controls activated by pressing, and quick pairing options are available for Android and Windows devices.
