Hulu offers $1-per-month subscriptions to mark National Streaming Day

It’s tricky to keep up with all the official and unofficial holidays these days, so we can understand if you missed that yesterday, May 20, was National Streaming Day (yes, there is such a thing).

As the term suggests, the idea behind this holiday is to celebrate streaming media. And as far as ways to celebrate it are concerned, we can’t think of a better way than the streaming service Hulu’s new offer of a subscription costing just $1 a month, for three months (so, $3 in total over the three months).

Those who are considering subscribing to Hulu using this offer can take advantage of it at any time from now until 11:59pm PST on May 27, with more information on the exact terms to be found on the Hulu website. You will need to be either a new or eligible returning subscriber to the service.

Also bear in mind that if you do subscribe to Hulu via this promotion, you will need to pay the standard $6.99-per-month price once those first three months are up, presuming you decide to continue subscribing after this time. Oh, and you will also have to sit through some adverts, as this is Hulu’s ad-supported plan.

Still, we reckon it sounds like a great deal overall.  For your $3 over those three months, you will get access to a streaming library consisting of “thousands of TV episodes and movies”, encompassing “full seasons of exclusive series, classic favorites, Hulu Originals, hit movies, current episodes, kids shows, and tons more.”

Hulu also advertises that its ad-supported plan enables entertainment fans to access most new episodes the day after they air, and to watch on a range of devices such as TVs, laptops, phones, and tablet computers. It is also possible for as many as six members of a household to have separate profiles on one plan, meaning favorites and recommendations can be specific to each viewer.

With even Netflix and Disney+ having seen the merits of the ad-supported streaming model in recent times, we wouldn’t worry too much about having to watch a few ads – and the price Hulu is charging for this service is as competitive as anyone could hope for.

And what’s in it for Hulu? Well, the opportunity to hoover up a few new subscribers who might just end up staying beyond the three-month promotional period, that’s what. Netflix has famously lost a decent number of subscribers lately, and Hulu has evidently bet on at least some of those being open-minded to an alternative that might seem to represent better value for money.

So, this new offer could be worth a go – particularly given that you always have the option of cancelling the subscription later if the content and all-round experience don’t quite do it for you.
