Apple working on native Apple Music app for Mac

Apple has reportedly begun working on a native Apple Music app for macOS.

As first spotted in the new macOS Monterey 12.2 beta, the company didn’t announce the change or provide any release notes, but it seems as though the firm has been rebuilding the Apple Music app to be native to macOS.

When Apple killed off iTunes back in 2019 and added new dedicated apps for Music, Podcasts, and Video, the company ported iOS apps over to macOS. As part of this, the Music app actually showed lots of web content loaded into an app, which made searching for new content on Music on the Mac particularly slow and painful.

It now seems that the firm is making some significant behind-the-scenes changes to the Music app on macOS, including the use of AppKit, which is Apple’s native interface framework. Although some parts of the app were already native, like the music library, the update means that searching for music is much faster, and scrolling between elements of the app is smoother and more responsive than the previous macOS Music app.
